Karen’s passion for fashion was re-ignited after a trip to India . Within six months of that trip, she began working full-time to make She Complete a reality. That was almost three years ago.

Today, She Complete can be purchased at Von Maur department stores, various boutiques in almost 30 states and at the company’s website www.shecomplete.com.

And if you were wondering, the accessories business is just as competitive as the clothing business. “Clothing lines are shown ten months or more in advance of the season; accessories are shown six months (in advance) at most”, Karen states. Due to this truncated buying timeline, Karen says that “there are a million other lines out there vying for the same customers as you are.” Translation: a lot of competition, all trying to get the same business, at the same time.

Although all of this is the case, it is the nature of the business, and She Complete’s business is going strong. The company has received press coverage in local and national publications such as Oprah magazine, OK magazine, the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Scene magazine.

So what is Karen’s advice to Chicago Fashion Foundation members who are aspiring to be accessory designers? She advises to get any kind of experience you can and not to take yourself too seriously. “You're not above the details”, Karen says, “everyone has to do work they don't like.”

Karen also says it is important to know your customer. “Just because you like something” Karen states, “doesn't mean it will sell.  Listen to your customer and continue to make products that fit them & their lifestyle.”
